The Mechatronics Engineering Department hosts the teaching of the mechanical engineering and automation and normal education for the mechanical engineering and automation, as well as short-cycle courses for adult education of automation. In recent years, the average number of the students at the department maintains 400. The department boosts to have a teaching team of highly academic level and reasonable age structure. Among the teaching staffs, 24 of them are lecturers, 2 of them are professors, and 11 of them are associate professors or senior engineers. 6 of the teachers are master-degree holders and 10 of them are PH.D degree holders. The ratio of the teachers below 40 years old is 2/3.
    The Department is composed of teaching units of the Engineering Drawing Office, the Mechanics Basis Laboratory, the Mechatronics Engineering Laboratory and 4 other research offices. The area for laboratory, teaching and research of the department covers more than 1000 square meters. The department has digitally-controlled process center, digitally-controlled machine tool and other laboratory instruments more than 400 units, with a total value of more than 7000 thousands RMB yuan. In addition, the department is entitled to administrate a training center among the State Digital-controlled Training Network.
    The department has 4 main research fields after 20 years development, namely digital design and manufacture, vibration control for mechanical system and problems detecting, special process and equipments for materials, control and automation for manufacturing equipments. From 1998, the teaching staffs have undertaken more than 20 research projects, 3 of which came from the state government. The teaching staffs have published more than 200 thesises on magazines home or abroad and 30 of them were quoted by SCI, EI, or ISTP.
    The department has a tradition of down-to-earth spirit and creativity. Now all the teachers are working hard for the goal of constructing Foshan University as one of the national and international best known universities and educating more qualified graduates for the nation.
